Dating Advice for Men: Make Wiser Choices in Love
Science-based guidance for men who want to make wiser choices in love
Are you tired of bad dates, rocky relationships or being on your own?

Does it feel as though you keep attracting women who aren’t right for you?

Are you ready to stop wasting time and effort - and consider doing things differently?

I'm Mila Smith - certified Relationship & Dating Coach based in Berkshire, UK. With 25 years' experience in relationship management and a research-backed approach, I help men break less helpful patterns, find their ideal partner and build a remarkable relationship.
Trusted by: The Independent, The Daily Mail, The Mirror, TIME, Yahoo, BBC Radio, HELLO!, Newsweek and more.
Love doesn't come with a manual, but there’s science behind what makes relationships work. Whether you're 25 or 50, single, divorced, separated or struggling in your relationship, I can guide you every step of the way.
Why is dating so hard for men - and how to make it easier
Men and women can experience love and dating differently. Evolutionary theory offers one explanation: the way we evolved to survive has shaped different priorities, needs and communication styles which, at times, clash.
Add to that constantly shifting gender roles and expectations. With many conflicting messages around masculinity and femininity, it’s no wonder many men feel frustrated, confused and disheartened.
Quite a mix, isn’t it? However, our differences can be a strength - creating attraction, balance and harmony. My role is to help you achieve that.

The first step is understanding yourself: your past experiences, relationship patterns, values, needs and boundaries.
The second step is understanding women. Women don't defy logic - you just need to recognise it because but we don't think or feel the same way you do.

Love is not random. Once you understand the patterns behind attraction, compatibility and healthy relationships, dating can begin to make a lot more sense.
Why am I still single?
Is this question keeping you awake at night? Let’s be clear: a relationship doesn't define your worth. You don’t need a girlfriend / wife simply to fill a gap or meet an expectation.

That said, a truly happy relationship with the right woman will enhance every area of your life.
So, what is really going on?
-
Maybe your confidence took a hit - or never fully developed - as a result, dealing with women feels harder than it should.

-
Perhaps, you burned your fingers in the past and no longer trust yourself to choose well.

-
Or you might fall in love quickly, only to lose interest just as fast, retreating into your shell before things get real.
Whatever the reason, you’re not stuck forever. It’s not an instant fix, but together, we can identify what’s keeping you in limbo and address it - improving your results.

What women want in a man

Many of my male clients ask: “What do women really want?”
Whilst some aspects are individual, studies consistently highlight these sought-after qualities across various cultures and demographics:
-
confidence and competence,
-
kindness and a caring nature,
-
generosity (with time, attention, emotional support, not just material resources)
Typically, these attributes rank above physical appearance for most women. According to evolutionary theory, these qualities signal stability and reliability - traits that historically increased the chances of the survival of offspring in a partnership.
Of course, we're living in a different world, but subconsciously, these preferences can still influence attraction today, even when having children isn’t part of the plan.
So, gentlemen, it’s time to stop worrying about a receding hairline or a shorter stature. Most women will overlook these things if you treat them well and make them feel special.
However, women possess a great attention to detail, especially when it comes to presentation. This leads us to the next topic...
First date advice for men
Our brains are hardwired to make snap judgments. Confirmation bias plays a powerful role in shaping our perceptions of others, and how others perceive us.
Psychologists call this the “primacy effect”: we tend to remember the first information we receive better than what comes later.

In other words: first impressions tend to stick, even in the face of conflicting evidence. That’s why first dates and first impressions really matter, so try to put your best foot forward.

Online dating has opened up a new context in how we relate to each other. Technology changes quickly, but the fundamentals of human attraction and healthy relationships haven’t changed nearly as much.
Dating apps are simply a vehicle for creating real human connections. Don’t get too distracted by algorithms or the latest shiny app. What matters is how you use them - and what happens once you connect with someone.
Think of dating apps as introduction apps. Their job is to introduce you to women you might never otherwise meet. Your goal isn’t to spend weeks messaging or collecting matches; it’s to identify potential, start a conversation and meet in person. UK free dating sites have a larger user base, but the overall quality is often lower because there's little to no barrier to entry.
How can men get better results on dating apps?

-
A clear, recent headshot: ensure there is nothing weird in the background, look into the camera to create connection, position it at eye level and smile. Positivity is one of the most attractive qualities.

-
Authenticity: put your best foot forward, but stay true to yourself. Pretending to be someone you’re not only leads to disappointment.

-
Connection: when writing your profile, imagine you’re speaking directly to the woman of your dreams. Be clear and detailed; avoid clichés and cheesy lines.

Online dating advice for men

Being shy isn’t a flaw. Not everyone is a confident, outgoing extrovert - and guess what? Not all women are looking for one. You certainly don’t need to reinvent yourself as an “alpha male” to be attractive. The real questions to consider are:

-
Is there an underlying reason for your shyness, such as low self-esteem, self-sabotaging beliefs or heavy emotional baggage? In which case, the cause must be addressed, not just the symptoms.
-
How do you show up: what impression do you give to strangers? Sometimes, shyness can be mistaken for being aloof, stuck-up or uninterested.
-
Is it preventing you from meeting new people and forming meaningful connections? Have you actually tried or just assumed it's not going to work?
There may be some work to do, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. One of my male clients was naturally shy when we started working together, and he is still relatively shy today. We didn't try to change his personality (which is next to impossible anyway). Instead, we focused on his strengths, understanding what he was looking for and helping him recognise his own value. It took some time, but now he is engaged to a stunning woman who is also his best friend.

Dating advice for older men
Everything is relative. In fact, many people find their 50s, 60s and beyond to be the happiest time of their lives!
Sure, there might be a few more wrinkles, and the gym isn’t quite as forgiving, but most are at peace with who they are, confident, financially secure and armed with decades of life experience.
The upside: women are often more open to dating older men. Research across more than 30 cultures shows that, universally, women tend to prefer men who are older than they are.
What really matters at this stage is understanding your values, needs and relationship goals. Whether you pursue online dating (e.g. Ourtime UK is a popular platform for dating over 50) or meet people organically, clarity is key: be honest with yourself and others about what you’re looking for and set realistic expectations.

What is the 3-6-9 and 5-5-5 rule in relationships and dating - and should you care?

“3-6-9” (months) usually refers to different stages of a new relationship and “5-5-5”… Well, the internet can’t even agree on that one since there are different interpretations.
I have a much better question for you: why are you worried about this? There’s a new "sensational" Reddit trend every week, and very little of it is grounded in real science or research.
The media loves all these trends and rules - such gimmicks are crafted mainly to grab attention and generate clicks.
Relationships are complex, many individual factors come into play, so you simply can’t put yourself under pressure over following all these rules. Unrealistic expectations only lead to frustration, disappointment and dejection.
Rather than giving you another set of dating “rules” to follow, I help you cut through the noise, understand your own patterns and priorities, and make better-informed decisions about the women you date and the relationships you pursue.
