Do I Need a Dating Coach? 6 Real-Life Situations Where Coaching Can Help

Whenever people ask me:

“Who needs relationship or dating coaching? My grandparents met at a dance and were married for sixty years.”

My answer is usually the same:

“Your grandparents expected far less from a relationship than you do; and many people remained together regardless of how happy or fulfilled they felt.”

Dating in the UK in 2026 is a whole different proposition. Fortunately, decades of research have given us a much better understanding of the principles behind attraction, compatibility and successful relationships.

Love and relationships may seem emotional and unpredictable - not something one can actively manage - but you have more agency than you realise. Yes, I'd say that because I'm a relationship and dating coach, but I know that you don't have to leave your relationship future entirely to chance. There are practical steps you can take - and I'll show you how and why.

There is a misguided belief that dating is something frivolous and a little saucy. At least, that’s the reaction I sometimes get when I introduce myself as a dating coach. For most people, dating is a route to something very important: a relationship, perhaps a future family and potentially many generations to come. The quality of our relationships is also closely linked to our overall wellbeing.

So, learning how to date smarter and build a healthy relationship is anything but frivolous!

When Should I See a Dating Coach?

I've worked with younger and older clients, men and women, and had the privilege of seeing genuinely life-changing outcomes: from despair and loneliness to happiness, engagements and marriage.

Do you recognise yourself in any of these situations?

1. How do I start dating again after divorce or a long relationship?

If you've spent years married or in a long-term relationship, returning to dating can feel like entering a completely different world. You may be experiencing a range of emotions, from grief, anger and anxiety to relief and excitement.

Everyone seems to focus on dating apps and how to use them most effectively. In reality, that's one of the last pieces of the puzzle. Even if you're keen to move forward, don't underestimate the effect that unresolved emotional baggage from your previous relationship can have on what happens next. Wanting a relationship is not the same as being ready for one.

How dating coaching can help:

We look at what you're carrying forward from your previous relationship, what you've learned from it and what you need to leave behind.

One of my clients in his fifties, for example, discovered that he couldn't fall in love or find anyone right because he was carrying a great deal of guilt for the breakdown of his long marriage. Although ending the marriage had been the right decision for both of them, that emotional burden coloured every new experience. Once we had worked through that, we reviewed his values, clarified what he was looking for in a partner and developed a healthier, more purposeful approach to dating again.

Here, you can find additional guidance on dating after divorce.

2. Why can't I get over my ex?

You know the relationship is over, or perhaps you know this person isn't right for you, but you just can't seem to let go... A message from your ex can derail you completely, sending you straight back into analysing what they meant, whether they still care and whether you should try again. Even when you start seeing new people, no one seems to compare. You’re left in limbo, unable to move forward and unable to let go of the past.

How dating coaching can help:

What you're feeling is completely normal. You can't simply click your fingers and reset your neurocircuitry because the relationship has ended, but you can make it much easier with the right help. We look objectively at the relationship, what keeps drawing you back and the patterns between you. Using my practical coaching strategies, you'll process the emotional baggage in a healthy way, build resilience and gradually refocus on your present and future.

I've worked with quite a few clients who genuinely believed they would never feel excited about love again. With time and the right support, they have gone on to rebuild their lives and start happy and healthy new relationships.

3. Why is no one attracted to me?

If you've been single for a while or experienced repeated rejection, you may be wondering  whether you're simply not attractive enough or whether you'll ever find someone who wants to be with you. The thought of dating may now feel daunting, and every unsuccessful date reinforces that self-sabotaging belief that something must be wrong with you. That belief is the first and the biggest challenge. Whether you’re aware or not, your wellbeing is governed by certain assumptions you make about yourself.

How dating coaching can help:

Attraction is more complex than appearance or confidence alone. Together, we explore what's really getting in your way and focus on helping you become a more authentic, self-assured version of yourself rather than trying to fit someone else's idea of what is attractive.

One of my male clients in his mid-30s was naturally shy when we started working together, and he is still relatively shy today. We didn't try to change his personality (which is next to impossible anyway) and turn him into an outgoing extrovert. Instead, we focused on recognising his strengths, understanding what he was looking for in a partner and helping him believe in his own value. It took time, but today he is engaged to a stunning woman who is also his best friend.

4. Why can't I find the right partner?

Perhaps attracting people isn't your problem. You get lots of attention and dates, yet nobody seems quite right, or you repeatedly invest your time in people who turn out to be dead ends.

There can be many reasons for this. You may be simply looking in the wrong places. You may be overlooking potentially compatible people because you don’t know what you really need in a relationship. Your expectations may be somewhat unrealistic if they are based on love myths and misconceptions. Your attachment style may be one of the reasons you push people away - but it doesn't have to dictate how you live.

How dating coaching can help:

Rather than trying to generate more dates, we look at your patterns of attraction and partner selection. Whom are you choosing and whom are you dismissing and why? What qualities are you prioritising, and do they actually predict the kind of relationship you want?

My former client was quite surprised to discover that her dopamine-driven personality contributed to her losing interest in every relationship after a while. She also realised she had certain expectations she’d never actually discussed with her partner but felt frustrated when he didn't meet them. Once she understood this pattern and learned what genuinely predicts relationship success, she was able to build a happy, healthy relationship with her boyfriend.

The aim is not to persuade you to “settle”. It's to become better at understanding what is genuinely important for long-term compatibility, based on decades of research.

5. Why is my relationship going nowhere?

Your friends are telling you to “dump them”, while your heart is telling you to stay. Perhaps you're technically together, but it feels more like a situationship. A lack of commitment and clarity leaves you constantly wondering where you stand.

That uncertainty shouldn't automatically be dismissed as you being “needy”. Consistency, availability, responsiveness, reliability and predictability (in the healthy, not boring, sense) are fundamental characteristics of a secure relationship. Their absence can take a real toll on your wellbeing. *

How dating coaching can help:

We assess the relationship objectively. Are you genuinely compatible? Do you want the same things? Is there evidence that the relationship can realistically develop? Can the two of you work on the issues together, or are you hoping someone will eventually become a different person?

Relationship science can help us recognise when someone isn’t fully invested in a relationship, even if they say otherwise. I recently shared five key signs with VICE.

We can communicate and reason, but we cannot make someone commit if they don't want to.

One of my clients was investing in a lovely but emotionally unavailable man who openly admitted he wasn’t ready for commitment. Once she stopped trying to convert him and listened to what he was telling her, she ended it, went travelling and later returned to dating using my framework. Today, she’s engaged to the “the love of her life” as she put it, and over the moon.

Pursuing the wrong person and attaching yourself to them not only makes you miserable but also keeps you off the market and closed to better possibilities!

6. How can I make better relationship and dating decisions?

You're single, self-aware and ready for a relationship in every way. You want to meet the right person, perhaps get married and start a family, but you don't want to waste time or make a costly mistake. This is actually the best time to seek guidance: prevention is always better than cure.

Too often, people wait until they're exhausted by dating or a string of bad relationships, have their heart broken and/or have spent considerable amounts of time and money going on dates without intention or knowing what to focus on.

How dating coaching can help:

Instead of treating dating as an endless numbers game, we develop a clear strategy. Taking a proactive approach to dating and relationships can help you understand your own patterns and address potential problems before they become painful. The aim isn't simply to go on more dates, but to make better decisions about the people you date with a science-based "vetting" process, learn to communicate your goals and needs clearly without sounding pushy and to uncover the formula of a happy, secure relationship.

Interestingly, in all the time coaching, only one person ever came to me proactively! She said: "There's nothing wrong. I just want to get married within a year." The only challenge was the timeframe. While it's sensible to approach dating intentionally, finding a compatible life partner isn't something that can be rushed.

Is Dating Coaching Worth It?

Well, how much does your personal happiness mean to you? Before you decide whether dating coaching is worth it, consider what the science tells us about the importance of getting relationships right.

Studies show that happy relationships do make you a healthier person in every way and enhance your life. A positive relationship is a real stress-buster as you have a supportive partner by your side, sharing troubles and success together.

On the other hand, studies find that being in an unhappy relationship (or a series of mediocre relationships) can contribute to various health issues, both mental and physical:

It can increase your chances of becoming ill by 35%. Negative relationships cause greater physical wear and tear on the body. **

The latest research finds that relationship struggles also require large amounts of energy - not in a metaphorical sense - quite literally, real energy, on a cellular level in the brain...

…when freed up, it can be funneled toward more meaningful and enjoyable endeavours, bringing about greater productivity and contentment. *

If you want to thrive in life, learning to create healthy, balanced relationships is one of the most important skills you can learn. Compared with years and thousands of pounds spent on disappointing dates, repeating unhealthy relationship patterns, feeling lonely or settling, dating and relationship coaching is a small investment into something that can shape the rest of your life.

How Can Dating & Relationship Coaching Help?

Understanding the science behind love is like shining a light under the bed. Once you see there were never any monsters there, the fear and uncertainty begin to disappear. Instead of relying on guesswork or luck, you gain the skills to make more informed relationship decisions.

If you're a die-hard romantic, don't worry - it doesn't replace romance. It simply helps your heart and your head work together because love alone is not enough.

Men and women have evolved many adaptations that help us attract a mate and reproduce, yet this is largely where nature's role ends. From an evolutionary perspective, human beings don't necessarily have all the built-in tools to maintain a happy life-long relationship. ***

However this is something we can learn: happy long-term relationships are built through conscious choices. Falling in love has never been the most difficult part. Building a secure, lasting relationship in the modern world is a different matter. It requires greater self-awareness, wiser partner selection and some knowledge and effort - and it doesn't have to be left to chance.
